4 Companies Finding Smart Solutions to Environmental Problems

We use so many things every day without really thinking about what happens to them once we are done. Old slippers go into the trash, plastic gets thrown away, diesel generators release smoke, and our need for electricity keeps growing. All of this adds to different environmental problems. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), more than 430 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year. Air pollution is another serious concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that almost 99% of the global population breathes air that exceeds its guideline limits. These problems are obviously too big for one company to solve. But that does not mean smaller solutions do not matter. Some companies are focusing on one particular problem and trying to find a better way to deal with it. Here are four that stood out to me.

Why We Need New Environmental Solutions

A lot of environmental problems are actually connected to very normal things we use every day. Plastic can remain in the environment for a long time. Old footwear contains a mix of rubber, plastic and synthetic materials that can be difficult to deal with after disposal. Diesel generators add pollutants to the air, while our growing demand for electricity also creates a need for cleaner alternatives. If these problems keep growing, so will the pressure on landfills, natural resources and the environment. Using less is definitely important, but that is only one part of it. We also need better product design, smarter ways to reuse waste, cleaner energy and better ways to control pollution. That is where CHUPPS, Econscious, New World Wind and Chakr Innovation come in.

1. CHUPPS – Rethinking What Happens to Old Slippers

Most of us buy slippers, use them until they are worn out and then throw them away. I don’t think many of us stop to wonder what happens to them after that. Footwear often contains rubber, plastic and other synthetic materials, which can make disposal difficult. CHUPPS is trying to look at that problem a little differently.

How Is CHUPPS Different?

CHUPPS uses a material called BioFoam in the soles of some of its biodegradable sliders. According to the company, its BioFoam sole is designed to completely break down within 24 months under landfill conditions without leaving microplastics behind. What makes this interesting is that the material is designed to stay stable while the slippers are being used, but biodegrade after disposal under the stated conditions. Of course, one pair of biodegradable slippers is not going to solve the footwear-waste problem. But the idea behind it makes sense. A company is not only thinking about how a product feels when we use it, but also what happens once we are finished with it. Website: Chupps

2. Econscious – Giving Plastic Waste a Second Life

Plastic is useful because it is lightweight, affordable and durable. The problem is that those same qualities become a disadvantage once we throw it away. A plastic item may be useful for only a short time, while the waste can remain around for much longer. Instead of looking at discarded plastic as something with no value, Econscious is trying to turn it into something useful again.

Turning Waste Into Useful Products

Econscious is an Indian social-impact company that works with post-consumer plastic waste. The company collects plastic waste and converts it into products such as benches, planters, dustbins and other useful items. According to Econscious, it has recycled more than 650,000 kg of post-consumer plastic waste. For me, the interesting part is what happens after the plastic is collected. It does not just get moved somewhere else and forgotten. It gets another use. Plastic that could have ended up in a landfill can instead become a bench, planter or another product that stays useful for years. Recycling is not the complete answer to plastic pollution. We still need to reduce unnecessary plastic use. But for plastic that already exists, giving it another life is clearly better than treating it as waste straight away. Website: Econscious

3. New World Wind – Bringing Wind Energy to Smaller Spaces

When we think about wind energy, most of us probably picture huge wind turbines in large open areas. New World Wind has taken the same basic idea but made it much smaller. The French company developed AeroLeaf, a small vertical-axis wind turbine designed in the shape of a leaf. Multiple AeroLeaf turbines can also be installed together in structures that look almost like trees.

How Does AeroLeaf Work?

When wind moves the vertical blades, the system converts that movement into electricity. According to New World Wind’s technical information, one AeroLeaf model has a maximum power rating of 300 watts and can begin operating at wind speeds of around 2.5 metres per second. Because the turbines are much smaller than traditional ones, the idea is to use wind-energy technology in places where a huge turbine would obviously not be practical. That could include some urban and commercial spaces. An AeroLeaf is not going to power an entire city, and its actual electricity generation depends on wind conditions and installation. But that is not really the point. What it shows is that renewable energy can also be designed for smaller spaces instead of only large-scale projects. Website: New World Wind

4. Chakr Innovation – Reducing Pollution at the Source

Diesel generators are still commonly used as backup power in hospitals, factories, offices and commercial buildings. They are useful when electricity is unavailable, but they also release pollutants into the air. Instead of only thinking about the pollution after it has already spread, Chakr Innovation is trying to reduce it closer to the source.

How Does Chakr Shield Work?

Chakr Innovation developed a retrofit emission-control device called Chakr Shield. Retrofit simply means that the device can be added to an existing diesel generator instead of replacing the whole machine. According to Chakr Innovation, its technology can reduce harmful emissions from diesel generators by up to 90%. That is what makes this solution interesting. It works on the pollution before those emissions spread into the surrounding air. This obviously does not turn diesel into a clean fuel. In the long term, moving towards cleaner energy is still important. But as long as diesel generators continue to be used, reducing their emissions is still a useful step. Website: Chakr

Quick Comparison

Company Environmental Problem Solution
CHUPPS Footwear waste Uses biodegradable BioFoam soles
Econscious Plastic waste Turns post-consumer plastic into useful products
New World Wind Need for cleaner energy Uses small AeroLeaf wind turbines to generate electricity
Chakr Innovation Diesel-generator emissions Uses retrofit technology to reduce emissions

What Can We Learn From These Companies?

  1. Think about what happens after use.
A product’s environmental impact does not end when we throw it away. Thinking about disposal while designing it can help reduce future waste.
  1. Waste can have another use.
Something that looks like waste today can sometimes become raw material for another useful product.
  1. Clean energy can work at different scales.
Renewable-energy solutions do not always have to be huge. Smaller systems may also have a place in the bigger picture.
  1. Pollution can be reduced at the source.
In some cases, it makes sense to stop or reduce pollution before it spreads rather than dealing with it later.

The Big Picture

None of these companies is going to solve the environmental crisis on its own. Biodegradable slippers will not end the world’s waste problem. Recycling plastic does not mean we should stop reducing plastic use. Small wind turbines cannot replace all fossil-fuel energy, and emission-control devices do not make diesel clean. Still, I think these ideas are worth paying attention to. Each company has taken one everyday problem and tried to approach it in a different way. CHUPPS is thinking about what happens to footwear after use. Econscious is finding another use for plastic waste. New World Wind is exploring smaller-scale wind energy, while Chakr Innovation is trying to reduce pollution before it enters the air. There probably isn’t one perfect solution to environmental problems. More likely, progress will come from many smaller changes happening together. Better products. Less waste. Cleaner energy. Smarter ways to control pollution. And sometimes, changing the way we make one ordinary product is a pretty good place to start.
