Independent Writer is an independently operated publication. We have been publishing since 2023, and we write for readers who want to understand a subject rather than be sold something.
What we publish
Reporting and explanatory writing across medicine, law, technology and the environment. In practice that means:
- Research-based articles explaining new studies and what they do and do not show
- Legal articles and commentary on public issues
- Educational resources and public awareness writing
- Interviews, editorial opinion, and guest articles from practitioners
- Theses and dissertations, published in full
A large share of what we publish concerns health. Health writing carries an obligation that other writing does not, because a reader may act on it — so those articles name their sources, carry a standing medical disclaimer, and are held to the sourcing rule set out in our editorial policy.
Editorial independence
We are not owned by, funded by, or affiliated with any of the organisations we write about. Opinions expressed by our authors, guest contributors and interviewees are their own and do not necessarily represent the position of Independent Writer.
The site is funded by display advertising. Advertising is sold by the ad network, not by us: advertisers have no say in what we publish, how it is framed, or where it appears. We do not accept payment for coverage, we do not publish sponsored content dressed as editorial, and we do not sell links. Our submission process is free at every stage — there is no pay-to-publish.
How we work
Every article that reports a study, a survey or another outlet's reporting names its sources at the foot of the piece. Primary sources come before news coverage. Where a claim cannot be sourced, it does not run. Our full editorial policy sets out how we source, review and correct what we publish, and what to do if you find an error.
We correct errors rather than quietly removing them. Substantially revised articles show both the original publication date and the date of the last update.
