These are the American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology categories from the 2017 guideline, which the 2025 update kept. The 2025 update calls readings over 180 and/or 120 “severe hypertension”; with signs of organ damage it is an emergency.
Measure seated, back supported, feet flat and arm resting at heart level, after 5 minutes of quiet rest and with no caffeine, smoking or exercise in the 30 minutes before.
