Activity factors

Your resting energy (BMR) is multiplied by one of these to estimate what you burn in a day.
Activity levelMultiply BMR by
Sedentary — desk job, little or no exercise 1.2
Lightly active — light exercise 1–3 days a week 1.375
Moderately active — moderate exercise 3–5 days a week 1.55
Very active — hard exercise 6–7 days a week 1.725
Extra active — physical job or training twice a day 1.9

How it is calculated

The exact formulas this calculator uses, and where they come from.
BMR, men 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5
BMR, women 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161
Daily calories BMR × activity factor
Weight change ± 7,700 kcal per kg, spread over 7 days (0.5 kg a week = 550 kcal a day)

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation predicts resting energy to within about 10% for most healthy adults. It is less reliable for very muscular people, during pregnancy or illness, and for teenagers.

Plans that would take you below about 1,200 kcal a day (women) or 1,500 kcal a day (men) are flagged, because intakes that low are normally only followed under medical supervision.
