How it is calculated

The exact formulas this calculator uses, and where they come from.
Devine, men 50 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches − 60)
Devine, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches − 60)
Healthy range BMI 18.5–24.9 (WHO) or 18.5–22.9 (Asian Indian) × height (m)²

The Devine formula was published in 1974 to estimate drug doses, not as a fitness target, and it takes no account of frame size or muscle. It is only defined from 5 ft (152.4 cm) upwards.

For everyday use, the healthy BMI range is the better guide: any weight inside it is considered healthy for your height.
